Andréa Kotarac is a Regional Councillor of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes since 2021. First, as a member of the Left Party and La France insoumise (Unbowed France), he was elected as a Regional Councillor of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes in 2015. He resigned from this mandate after supporting the list of the National Rally / Rassemblement National (former National Front) in the European elections of 2019. The National Rally then placed him at the top of the list in the regional elections of 2021 in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
He illegally travelled to the so-called “Donetsk People's Republic” in May 2018 and met with its leadership.

On 11 November 2018, the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic, located within the internationally recognised borders of Ukraine, held “elections” to elect a head of the “republic” and members of its “parliament”. The overwhelming majority of the world’s nations does not recognise the sovereignty of the Donetsk People’s Republic, while international institutions such as the OSCE ODIHR considered “elections” there as illegitimate and did not send international election observers there.
