Alexis Tarrade is a Frech politician, who regularly comments for the Russian state-controlled Sputnik website and is a close friend of Thierry Mariani. He resigned his duties at the Republican party in February 2020. Alexis Tarrade has been the President of the Union of French nationals living abroad in Russia (Union des Français de l'Etranger Délégation Russie) since 2015. In 2018, as part of the delegation led by Thierry Mariani, Tarrade illegally visited Eastern Ukraine to observe the illegitimate general elections in the DPR. Tarrade is a Secretary General of AFER Association providing expatriation assistance and advice. One of the AFER's sponsor is Thierry Mariani.

On 11 November 2018, the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic, located within the internationally recognised borders of Ukraine, held “elections” to elect a head of the “republic” and members of its “parliament”. The overwhelming majority of the world’s nations does not recognise the sovereignty of the Donetsk People’s Republic, while international institutions such as the OSCE ODIHR considered “elections” there as illegitimate and did not send international election observers there.
