Alexander Grönlund is the son of a Swedish entrepreneur Ulf Grönlund, who moved to St. Petersburg in the early 1990s and became one of the first Western entrepreneurs to establish business in Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

In their turn, Ukrainian authorities warned that any participation in the electoral process in Crimea would be illegal.
